So, Billy Batson, or Shazam or Captain Marvel, whatever you want to call him, I found him at a Wal-Mart by my house along with Dr. Sivana and I had to get both of them, there was only one Sivana so mine had a couple flaws that I just had to live with and a bunch of Shazams. This was also shortly after they had announced the figures would be out and I didn't have much on me so my mom helped me out with this figure. Thanks mom!
"All it takes is the word "SHAZAM!" for young Billy Batson to transform into a magic-powered super hero."
As far as the character goes, I'm not too familiar with the character himself, I do know that he's a kid that transforms into an adult Superman-like superhero... boy does that have some interesting history.
Anyway, watch the movie if you haven't already, this figure has pretty good sculpt but very weird proportions, his legs and arms are a little too skinny and his upper torso looks way too big. There is a really nice texture on his red uniform and even the belt, gauntlets and boots have a buttload of nice little intricate details all over their sculpt.
The only detail that is painted on is the design on the cape, which honestly, is a shame that it wasn't make out of cloth or even had an alternate hoodie piece. As for the face, it looks absolutely nothing like Zachary Levi which is really unfortunate, the Mezco figure that I'm not getting (probably) looks very much like him. I do have the DC Multiverse Aquaman (2018) figures and those did a good job with the likeness for the most part. I don't know something about this figure, I guess it's the smirk that just makes the whole thing look off.
Still, articulation is good for the most part, some of the sculpt restricts the articulation in certain parts but it's mostly free to go anywhere.
He does have a bit of trouble standing up or holding certain poses where he stands on mostly one leg. His head is on a dumbell joint that doesn't really allow him to look up but the ab crunch helps... sort of. You can get him to look up but in a very awkward position.
He comes a couple accessories, it's pretty surprising, he comes with a pair of fists.
A pair of flying hands that can be used for flying. Duh, but it's a little too specific but I'm glad they're here, I wish he came with a pair of relaxed hands instead of...
Two grabby hands that he can hold all of his no accessories to go with those. I'm not sure why they need to add these but if you have the Gwenpool he can borrow the phone.
If you know what you're doing, this is a really cool figure to pose and using the movie for reference helped a lot. I wish he came with effect pieces much like Mera did. Maybe some lightning, lightning for his hand, lightning from his hands, lightning from his haaaandsss!
The face does kinda ruin certain poses, a more stoic face would have been greatly appreciated. This is one of my very few multiverse figures, and I'm happy, the quality of plastic is very different from Hasbro, it's a harder plastic and in certain parts it feels a little bootleggy. It is nice to have him paired with Brie's Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers.
Dr. Sivana was the other figure that I got and I thought was going to be much rarer. He kind of is? I remember seeing 3 of him in one place but now it's mostly just Shazam.
"Dr. Sivana has spent his life trying to access the rock of Eternity and acquire the Wizard's powers, but he is filled with greed and drawn to evil."
I'm pleased and extremely surprised with how accurate this whole figure looks. At first I wasn't impressed with design, he looked like a normal guy with a weird eye.
The design of his suit is pretty nice, you can get away with using him as a bouncer or some sort of business type guy. In the film he's actually surprisingly intimidating.
The first head that we'll take a look at is his head with glasses which is okay, it's not bad and the glass aren't removable which is okay. They'd get lost or break much like mine did with my Doc Ock.
He has a pair of fists which pop on and off fairly easily, both Shazam and Sivana do but they ball joint feels kinda brittle which makes me not want to swap out hands.
He has big open grasping hands which are used for a specific accessory but they can work as monologuing hands which can be fun.
His second head looks a lot like Mark Strong, it's scary how much his likeness shows here. He did a great job as Dr. Sivana, his second attempt at a villain in the DC Universe.
His next accessory is an 8 ball which doesn't have much detail besides the "8" on it.
It's supposed to be a magic 8 ball but there's no little opening anywhere on the sculpt.
It can also fit in any of the two grasping hands, the left hand looks to be more specifically made for this.
They're both about 18.99 in Wal-Mart, they're both nicely articulated and I recommend them if you watched and enjoyed the film. I really liked the Justice League and it makes me sad that the DCEU isn't doing so hot. I always preferred DC over Marvel because I loved Superman and Spider-Man would always come in second.
You can recreate a lot of scenes from the movie and I feel like there's a lot of figures that are missing from this line. There's at least 6 other characters or even 13 other characters that could have been a part of this wave of figures. I'm not going to spoil anything but there's plenty to be done with them.
Although the trailer didn't look very good, it did do the job at getting me into the theaters.
And I did not regret it, Zachary Levi is really good in the role of the child turned superhero. He just looks like a larger buffer Jimmy Fallon which is really funny to me. I'm excited to see more of Shazam in the DCEU, I just gotta watch Justice League, Wonder Woman, and that's about it I think.
I also didn't notice that he was Fandral in Thor: The Dark World, in that one his personality didn't really shine through which is unfortunate but that led to become Shazam which suits him much better.
Watch the movie, and then get the figure at Wal-Mart, I think that's the only place where they can be found. The movie made me a lot more excited about the DCEU, it's a shame that Ben Affleck is no longer Batman, not that he really made much of an impact on me as Batman, more of a continuity thing. And last I heard Henry Cavill was no longer playing Superman. So we'll see what the DCEU has in store for us.
