Review: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - (First Edition) Black Series (91) Rey & D-O

On Triple Force Friday I went out to get some new Star Wars figures, my goal was to get all of the 6th Edition figures... I failed, but I did get most of them. On that day I got Kylo Ren (90), Sith Trooper (92), Offworld Jawa (96), and First Order Stormtrooper (97). I couldn't find the Mandalorian, and I wasn't interested in the ones from the games so I waited and got those later at Walgreens. I'm still missing the First Edition Mandalorian... I didn't get the regular releases until later, I got the Sith Trooper from Amazon, and I got Kylo Ren during Triple Force Friday as well. I just got this Rey figure today, especially after watching the movie last night (12/19/19). I loved it and I won't give any spoilers yet, I'll wait a couple days before doing that. I was satisfied, as someone who only watched the sequel trilogy I thought it was a fitting end. I was familiar with the original trilogy and I watched Star Wars: A New Hope (1977) so I understood a lot of what was going on. Let's get to the review.

You can see the differences between the boxes, I prefer the First Edition Box because you can clearly see the art made for the box.
The sides are identical, nothing changes.
The back is the same but the boxart is much clearer.
The right side of the box has inverted colors.
This is number 91 of the third phase of Black Series.
The regular box has Rey & D-O on the side.

REY

"Rey continues to study the Jedi ways, but she grows concerned about the future - and the Force - may hold in store for her."

D-O

"Cobbled from odds and ends in the workshop of a droidsmith, little D-O is an impressionable little roller that becomes fixated upon BB-8."

 REY

The design is very similar to her previous outfits, same robe and belt but this time in a white color. She also has a holster much like her Jedi training uniform. She also has a hoodie, this one she can't wear, *SPOILER* she does put it on in the film. I was actively thinking about that, I noticed that she had a hoodie and was trying to remember if the figure did too. And then I thought, "it's okay if she doesn't use it." Low and behold, she does use it... *SPOILER*
The head looks okay, it looks nothing like Daisy Ridley. They tried but this looks nothing close to her, she does look like her from very very specific angles but not most. A lot of the figures have poor paint around the hair in the top right side of her hairline.
She also has a bag that I don't really remember. It looks good, it serves no purpose and it doesn't really stay in place so I prefer to leave it off.
The staff is weird this time around, it's two pieces. The two ends are connected by the strap and the middle part is a separate piece. I don't understand why but it makes it a lot more fragile.
It can still go around her head and it'll stay in place.
She can still use the staff but I don't see why they would do that, it's held by very thin pegs so it'll warp or even break if you use it at the wrong angle.
She also comes with her blaster that she got from Han in the first film.
It's alright, nothing special, a nice silver paint job.
You also get the usual Lightsaber with varying thickness of the saber part itself, this one is on the thicker end. It does peg in easily but it's very fragile.
The handle has a lot of detail but the paint is a little sloppy which is understandable for such a small item at a $20 price point. I haven't seen a way to peg it into the waist so I don't think it does.
Once you attach the light part it looks pretty nice, again, I'd handle it with care since it is quite fragile.
It's very transparent and it does it's job. I don't think there's any other way to make the lightsaber work in this scale.
Rey has the usual articulation, hinge and ball joint at the head. The shoulders have a hinge and swivel as do the hips. There's an elbow swivel that works well and a single hinge with a little past 90-degree bend. Ball jointed diaphragm. Thigh swivel, double jointed knees, peg swivel and hinge for the ankle. The knees are a little funky, they are at an awkward angle and she would have benefitted from a boot swivel. The robe also gets in the way as well as the tunic that she wears under the robes.
If you have the Fan Channel Exclusive Skywalker Strikes Luke you can use the accessories on Rey to have her train like a Jedi.

 D-O

D-O was a cute little droid, interesting design and I was surprised it talks.
It was also interesting how they made this figure work, the wheel turns, the head is on a ball joint and the antennae are ball jointed and very articulated. But it's also very fragile and it scares me to move the head around. He also doesn't like to look up because he'll fall due to the weight of his head. You get a small little piece that "sticks" to the wheel so it doesn't roll and fall over.
It does look good with you Chewie, 3PO, and BB-8.
They both scale very well with the other figures and characters from the film.
This is also the tallest Rey out of all the previous figures.
I still think the Island Journey Rey from Star Wars: The Last Jedi looks more like Daisy Ridley than the newer figure despite having much better technology.
Rey shouldn't be too hard to find, unfortunately people have some strong opinions with the female lead or just because it's not what they wanted and that's okay. Personally, I love the character and I loved the sequel trilogy. I saw the most recent film as a good conclusion to the series. Rey should be at about $19.85 or $19.99 at Wal-Mart or Target, Amazon, and Walgreens. $22.99 at GameStop, and if you want to get the first edition one, check eBay or even some Walgreens, they might still have them. It has been a couple months so they'll be harder to find. Happy Hunting!
