Review: Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers - Hasbro Lightning Collection Goldar (GameStop Exclusive)

Goldar! Rita's right hand man! Finally a good representation of a very iconic Sentai and Power Ranger's villain. Goldar is the adaptation of Grifforzer from the 16th season of Super Sentai, Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger where he looked pretty silly honestly, the sculpted face on this figure looks a lot more intimidating. I always saw him as more of a canine-like creature, like a wolf but I guess I see the flying monkey inspiration in the design. This figure was a surprise and a lot of people were disappointed that it was an exclusive figure for such a popular character. This one was a GameStop exclusive, and there were some issues regarding his release. He was supposed to be released around mid-August, about August 10th, but a lot of people started receiving theirs before then. For others, like myself, had their orders cancelled for some reason (mine said there was an issue with the payment but I doubt that). I had to go to the store personally, a lot of them told me that the figure wasn't to be released until October which the website clearly contradicted, and then finally at one of them they let me order one from the store and I finally received it.

I do like the box, it's a cheesy, orangey-gold color which is different than the other boxes from Wave 1. Someone on Rangerboard pointed out that exclusives have the color of the character all around the box instead of the white with the head of the character.
The back shows the prototype which is a lot more uniform in color than the actual product. These are the renders and not actual physical prototypes. The wings on the prototype are different, the actual product has more accurate wings.
The face wraps around the left side of the box where you can see the logo for the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers up on the top.
All of the accessories are visible from the window and once you take the figure and the background out...
Goldar and most of his accessories are on the tray, except for his wings.
The wings are on the cardboard background that goes on the inside.
But before we put the wings on, the base body is pretty nice, not as golden as the prototype but it's passable. It's not as bad as the butterscotch ranger from Bandai of America. The detailing on the armor is pretty neat, I love the texture that they used for the plating in the center of the pieces of the armor. The tail is also sculpted very well, a lot of the figure is soft plastic because of the armor. The chest, pauldrons, and skirt pieces are very soft and allow for good range of motion. He does appear wingless in the show but it doesn't look right, there's supposed to be a retracter wing piece that the suit used which isn't present in the figure.
Attaching the wings is fairly easy although make sure you get to the body and not just the rubbery armor. The peg is pretty small so it will come off fairly easily, the whole thing is soft plastic. My Goldar has a very bow legged stance and soft joints which can be annoying when trying to stand him up. I have to either, give him a big stance or lean him forward which is a shame.
The head is incredible, the amount of detail is impressive, it looks more menacing than the costume, his hair is very soft so it doesn't get in the way of the range of motion and the helmet is nicely detailed. I'm very happy with how the figure came out and it's a peak to the promising future of villains in the Lightning Collection line.
He does come with a fair amount of accessories. He comes with a left closed fist and an open hand.
The open hand has a nice evil gesture which can come in handy for a lot of poses.
He comes with a pair of grabby hands and his sword which is pretty basic, it's a dull grey color with no gold highlights like it's supposed to. The hands are very hard which is different than most of the figures in the line, I have to slide in the sword and it caused a lot of scrapes on the butt of the sword.
The sword also comes with a lightning effect which fits perfectly on the blade.
The wings are also articulated, they swivel at the pin and they have a hinge for flapping action.
There's a hinge on the wings for them to fold in and retract which work well but mine was a little tight so I would be careful.
I love that he's in figure form, now we just need Rita, we already have putties and Lord Zedd it's not a party until Rita shows up.
He's a great piece on his own and scales well with the other figures.
The loose joints are a shame and I guess he's supposed to be hitting stores next month? I'm not sure but I'll try to get another one.
Articulation is pretty basic, ball and hinge at the head, ball jointed diaphragm, and hips.
Hinge and swivel at the shoulders, an ab crunch, double hinge at the elbows and knees.
The ankles have forward and back and a pin for rocking action but the design does hinder the movement.
The flap at the instep isn't soft so it doesn't let the foot go forward much.
He does scale well with the other villains. Shorter than Lord Zedd but that's mostly because of his stance, he's taller than the putty which is to be expected.
He's taller than the Green and Pink Rangers so have fun with those pictures!
He fits well with the Armored Red Ranger from the SDCC two pack, he's shorter than the Legacy Collection figure but not by much, they don't scale well together unfortunately.
So, I don't know how hard it's going to be to find him. I believe GameStop has started putting him out in certain areas in the U.S. and he'll be about $22.99 which is pretty standard for a basic collector figure. He's going to be a great addition to the collection especially for such an iconic character. He should be showing up soon, hopefully, and he does appear on the website occasionally, he was available for a bit a couple days ago so keep an eye out on the website! Happy hunting!
