Review: Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) - NECA Rodan

Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) has been out on DVD for a couple weeks now and I haven't gotten one yet but I will. Seriously, that was such a great movie I don't know why I didn't go watch it in Theaters more than once! Regardless, the NECA figures have been promising, unfortunately they're not planning on releasing a King Ghidorah that will scale with these figures but for the ones that were released, they're pretty good. I can't really say the same about the Godzilla though, let's see how Rodan holds up. Rodan was the third figure in the series to be released and it was the one I was the most excited for.

The box is incredible, I love the artwork that they used for the front of the box, you get a nice shot of Rodan surrounded by the smoke from the volcano he escaped from. You get the logo at the bottom.
The back shows a nice shot of the figure and other figures in the line. The side of the box has a couple features included such as the 13" wingspan, the articulated wings which isn't that new but it's a nice feature to have on a Rodan figure. There's also an included stand for the figure. The side shows the same text as the other figure which talks about the Monsterverse.
The flap opens up to show the figure and all of the accessories. There's also another product shot.
This one has nice lighting and it shows the figure on the base.
Right out of the box, everything is on it's place and there's a couple twisty ties to unwind.
The base has pretty nice paint applications, the mountain rocks have a very nice wash to make the detail pop. The Monarch base is also nicely painted although it does look a little small, especially since it was supposed to hold Rodan. Looking at the scene from the movie, the layout is incredibly accurate but I still think it's a little small. The explosion piece is a separate piece that has a very specific port so you can't just plug it in wherever.
The base also plugs in but not all the way, it's a little tight and the plastic isn't the toughest in the world so be careful when plugging it in. Rodan fits snugly on the clasp.
Honestly, the detail on the whole figure is amazing, the texture on the skin around the wing membrane and the arms is very intricate. The paint application is pretty good, it's a very dark reddish-brown color with the ends of the wings being a more orange color to capture the flaming effect but it doesn't really pull it off in my opinion.
The first head with the closed jaw looks amazing and captures the look of Rodan from the movie perfectly. There's a red wash in the folds of the skin, not just on the face but on the rest of the body. The eyes are small and yellow and make him look quite intimidating unlike most Rodans, no offense.

Unfortunately the jaw isn't on a hinge so there's a separate head. It isn't hard to swap out but the pin is very thin and requires a little bit of force to pull out. The head gets a pretty good range of motion.
The wings are articulated but mine has a loose shoulder joint, since the wings aren't that light they droop so just be aware of that. It's on a hinge but it only allows for up and down movement, not forward and back. There's also a pin around the hand, it's very small and thin so be careful with it. I thought I broke mine but it took a little bit of figuring out to put back.
The wings are very impressive, they're most of the figure so that's accurate, and since there isn't a lot of articulation, the stretched out position is the best looking. Honestly, for what it is the articulation works well.
The feet are articulated but they're on a weird cut at the hip. The more forward, the more the toes point out. I think they're on a ball joint so if you fiddle around with it it's easy to fix the position.
It does scale well with the NECA Godzilla from the same movie and if you have a different stand you can get a lot more dynamic poses.
I wish there was a better flame effect for the wings and maybe a more dynamic stand because the one it comes with does get in the way sometimes. For what it is, it does the job, a nice representation of the figure, there is the bigger basic figure that looks alright, this is much better and a much more affordable price, there is the Monsterarts one coming out soon so it's either this one or the other.
For the cheap price of about $24.99 or $22.99 it's pretty good. Compared to the over $80 set the Monsterarts one that's coming out next month, it's a great deal. The sculpt and paint is amazing and if you're just going to display it, it'll do that job perfectly especially with the base it comes with. You can find him at F.Y.E. stores but they're a lot more expensive there (about $29.99 or $25.99), the ones from Target and GameStop are the cheaper options but harder to find in stores. It was fun taking pictures with this figure although the wings could definitely be better articulated but what can you do? The plastic is also quite hard so I would be careful with the wings. The two heads aren't an issue for me but an articulated jaw would have been better. Happy hunting!
