Review: Godzila: King of the Monsters (2019) - NECA Mothra

Mothra, the queen of the monsters, initially I wasn't super stoked about Mothra's design in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. I thought it just looked like a giant bug that didn't really resemble Mothra, Rodan at least looked like Rodan... although he is just a giant Pterosaur. Regardless, once I got to see the movie I loved Mothra so much, even though she's in her Imago form for a short amount of time I thought she left quite the impression. What really got me was the credits, they played Mothra's song! And that was the entire song! There were snippets of the song here and there throughout the film but to have the whole song almost made me shed a tear. Let's get to it!

The box has concept art of Mothra that doesn't capture the design that they went with for the film.
The back has a prototype shot of the figure without the stand and some other products on the line. I did overpay for this at F.Y.E., I did see it at Target but skipped out on it because I didn't have the money for it and when I did they didn't carry it. I initially saw it at GameStop but it was someone else's that they accidentally put out.
The side has the same monsterverse bio thing that the other two figures had. The other has some of the features, the 12.5" wingspan, articulated wings, and the display base with the support rod.
The front does open up and it's held by velcro. The window shows all of the items included well with a nice stormy background.
The art on the lid shows the prototype figure and the base with some mist or light smoke.
The blister pack holds everything well as well as some plastic ties that hold the figure in place. Since Mothra's front claws, or larger claws, are on a ball joint, they tend to pop off easily due to their size.
The base looks amazing, although I'm not sure what it's supposed to be, I don't quite remember in the movie but she cocooned herself behind a waterfall. The details and paint application on the foundation have a nice silver color with a black and blue-ish wash. The cocoon itself has a glossy greenish-blue color to it with a hint of white and black details.
The stand plugs in fairly easily and clips on the figure around the top of the abdomen. The clips keep the wings from drooping which is a little bit of an issue.
The detailing on the wings is impressive, they have a pretty cool texture and detailing on the membrane of the wings. They're supposed to look like Godzilla's eyes and I guess I see it?
The detailing on the body is also impressive, the body is white with a black/brown wash that makes the sculpted detail pop. The head is really small and the eyes are painted a nice blue. The wings are sculpted into the body since they would be extremely fragile so I understand.
Having the wings sprawled out makes Mothra look much larger than she actually is and that's the point, in the movie she wasn't that big compared to the other monsters and honestly, she looked a little frail but she held her own.
The articulation is, very limited, especially around the wings, they're all on a hinge and a swivel at the pin that attaches to the thorax.
The forewings attach a little higher but very close to the hindwings which can get in the way. Due to how small  they are they're a little tight so I'm scared to move them around considering my experiences with other NECA figures (Crash Bandicoot, not Godzilla figures, well, maybe one Pacific Rim figure)
The front legs and back legs are both on ball joints, the front legs get the better range but they fall off easily. The back legs are a little tighter on mine. The little ones aren't articulated unfortunately but due to the size of the figure, it's understandable.
Much like Rodan, I wish she came with a more articulated base because it'll make the figure a lot more Dynamic rather than putting her on the stand in a very static and boring position.
Both Rodan and Mothra have a lot more potential than the 2019 Legendary Godzilla that NECA came out with which is a little sad to say.
She does scale well with the other two figures, I wish the wings weren't articulated the way they are but since they wouldn't really hold up, I understand the decision. I will probably get the Monsterarts 2-pack if I get the chance, I'll pull that trigger on the King Ghidorah too since NECA won't be making one, at least any time soon.
She's fairly easy to find at F.Y.E. stores if you're willing to pay a couple extra bucks ($25.99). But if you can find her at GameStop she's about $22.99 and weirdly enough, she's the same price at the F.Y.E. online store. Check online too, Wal-Mart seems to have her in stock. I do think $25.99 is a little too much to pay for this figure so if you can her for close to $20 the better. Happy hunting!
