The box is easily one of my favorites. I like the simple design which allows for easy storage, more colorful than The Black Series and much easier to store than Marvel Legends.
From the side you can see the nice artwork of the Red Ranger, it's a different angle than the one from the San Diego Comic Con box set.
The back has the artwork which is poorly posed but what else is new. I do prefer the actual product this time around compared to the CG model.
You get another angle of the figure. I never noticed that the shadows have a slight thunderbolt design to it. I like the stylized look to them but I'd prefer an actual picture of the Rangers istead.
Red Ranger
Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers was the very first Power Rangers season in the west and came out in 1993 which I'm sure everyone knows at this point. If you didn't know, Power Rangers revolves around a very simple formula, Japan creates it, Saban takes that footage, films new scenes with western actors and makes a new story, for the most part. It's based off of Toei's 16th Sentai Season, Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger. Originally Jetman was supposed to be the season to make it here, the same with a bunch of different seasons including Dynaman (which did make it) and Bioman. Anyway, it was a huge hit and now it's constantly reused but I'm not complaining!
As for the Zyuranger's design is simple and incredibly iconic. It's easily one of the most recognizable designs for a Tokusatsu hero ever. I love the way the diamonds are used throughout the suit, in the boots and gloves as well as the chest. The base body is similar or nearly identical to the Red Galaxy Ranger. Although, I do think it suits this design a lot more because of the simple diamond design. The belt looks amazing, I think it looks much better than the previous belts or at least it's painted much better. It has the black clip, the silver buckle with the black bolts, red ring and gold coin.
The helmet is okay, and it's surprisingly common that they can't do this helmet justice. There are very few figures with good helmets, one of them is the 3.75" figure from 2010 and the Armored Might Red Ranger from the 20th Anniversary Toyline. It has all the necessary details, the eyes, the teeth, the mouthplate and all the groves up at the top. The visor doesn't connect at the front and the helmet looks squished, it looks way too narrow.
As far of accessories, the Lightning Collection line does a fairly good job for it being at the $20 price point. You get a pair of fists which are always handy.
You get a fair of grabby hands which are perfect for his iconic pose.
You get the Blade Blaster in it's gun mode but this time painted with white detail. It could be better but it's okay.
It does suffer from the same issues most blasters do in this line, they can't shoot straight.
You also get the Power Sword which has a cooler name in Japanese, the Ryugekiken (龍撃剣) which stands for Dragon Attack Sword. It has a good silver blade, the nice gold detail along the guard. The handle is black, the only thing is missing is the gold detail along the handle. You also get the lightning effect which looks amazing but it's reused from the Red Dino Charge Ranger.
You also get the civilian head, which has a fairly decent likeness to Austin St. John but it's not perfect, you can tell it's him but he looks a little too cheeky. The hair looks strange but it works for what it is. It's identical to the one from the SDCC boxset.
It's perfect to pose with the main body since you saw that a lot more often than you did with the Sentai seasons.
The head is a little too tight on this body which is alarming to be honest.
In the end, I think it's a fantastic figure. There's a lot to love about it especially because of the quality and the accessibility as well as the good price for what it is.
There are a lot of things to like about it and there are some nitpicks. The missing blade blaster in holster form, which isn't the end of the world, you could use the one from the SDCC set, although it is something that could have easily been included.
Some other slight QC issues such as warped limbs, which I haven't been a big victim of and it's fairly easy to fix with some hot water. The sword also loses paint when used, it smudges the white gloves which is annoying, the SDCC one had the same issue.
Articulation is basic, which is pretty good. Ball jointed head, a hinge at the neck.
You get the fantastic butterfly shoulders, pin on the shoulder for swivel, a hinge for in and out motion. You get a swivel on the bicep.
Double jointed elbows, swivel at the pin for the wrist, the hinge for forward and back for both pairs of hands. You get a balljointed diaphragm, lower ab crunch.
You get ball jointed hips, thigh swivel, double jointed knees, the very useful boot swivel, seriously it's so useful for a lot of poses. You get the forward facing pin and hinge on the ankle.
It's not much different from the SDCC figure. The biceps are new and the belt is new. The rest is identical. The belt is much better on this figure than it was on the exclusive one.The helmets are the same but the paint for the trim along the visor looks a bit more silver. This one looks like it has a bit of white for the trim and silver for the teeth but it's hard to tell. It might just be silver and it's identical to the other one.
The unmasked head looks the same but it sits higher on the newer figure which is okay with me. You can also put the other head on which doesn't have the best likeness to Austin St. John but it's another option.
I love this figure and it's definitely worth $20 bucks. He should be easy to find considering he's been out for a little over a month. $20 everywhere except for GameStop and FYE and maybe some online stores. There is 2 of him in every box so he's not rare by any means but he will sell faster then most of the other figures in the line. Happy Hunting!
